Blind gamer sues Sony Online for not making MMORPGs more accessible

  • news

It’s easy to think that a blind gamer is a flat contradiction of terms, but then again, the same thing was once said of blind readers and blind film goers. It’s true in all three cases that games, books and film are visual mediums, but the blind enjoy films with closed captioning all the time, and books are read both on-tape and in braille for the enjoyment of the visually impaired. Translating games in a manner in which the blind can enjoy them is a difficult prospect, but it is not necessarily impossible.

Still, it’s hard to see a lot of merit in a recent lawsuit filed against Sony Online by a blind gamer for not making their games more accessible to the visually impaired. The suit, filed by disabled gamer Alexander Stern in California, alleges that Sony violates the Americans with Disabilities Act by failing
to implement features to make its games accessible to visually impaired gamers… specifically in regards to massively multiplayer games.
