Even Grounds, an accessibility consulting company based in Washington DC, was invited to attend this year’s UN-GAID (United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development) Annual Meeting and Global Forum. This UN conference was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center from May 18 to 20, 2008.

The main goal of the conference was to bring international stakeholders together in order for them to plan the next steps to attain GAID’s objectives and discuss how to effectively implement the GAID business plan. Notable individuals who attended the conference included representatives from the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and experts from other local and international organizations.

During the conference, Mr. Babinszki, accessibility consultant and owner of Even Grounds, did a comprehensive presentation about the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technology (G3ICT).

G3ICT is a UN initiative that focuses on advocating the implementation of the Digital Accessibility Agenda. This international agenda was adopted by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

As a member of g3ICT’s steering committee, Mr. Babinszki provided concrete information regarding the G3ICT initiatives, its significance, its activities, and how it could contribute to GAID’s objectives. During his discussion, Mr. Babinszki also stressed the importance of ICT and media accessibility, and how these practices can enhance the lives of persons with disabilities and benefit the groups that cater to this sector.

Mr. Babinszki stated that
he hopes that more policy makers and business leaders would realize what the initiative is about and would work hand-in-hand with G3ICT.
