Pages Opening in a New Window

  • Developers' Corner

There are instances when it is necessary to open a page in a new window when the user activates a link. It is important to inform the user about it. I will give you a couple of ideas of doing it to keep a solution accessible.

When you open a page in a new window, make a statement about right after the link, such as:

Even Grounds Blog (opens in new window).

This text can be anything else to fit your content and style, as long as the purpose is obvious. However, stay away from long phrases, such as "When you activate this link, it opens a new window". This can become quite annoying, especially if you have many of these links.

If you have many links on a page which open a new window, it may also not look too good to attach an explanation to every single link. But there isn't a need for that. As long as you make it obvious which links open a new window, you can display a message only once. For example: "the following links open in a new window", or "All links in this article open a new window". With less text and clutter, you can achieve the same result.

Another solution would be to design an image which you use to indicate that it opens in a new window. You can attach this image to each link, and use an alt tag for the message.
