Audio description

IBM Research-Japan and WGBH’s Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) are conducting a joint study via an online survey
on the applicability of speech synthesis for audio description of Web-based video.

Adults (18+ years of age) who are blind or have low vision will be asked to share their opinions about a few short video clips which include synthesized
description.

Audio description is used by those who cannot see what happens on the screen. Videos normally provide more information than what can be percieved through sound. Audio description is used to communicate this information.

Up until recently, I thought that "let's watch a movie" could be an easy-to-implement, innocent idea. It still is, if the group you suggest it to can hear, can see, climb the steps and does not have a dietary restriction. But what happens, if certain members of a group lack all of the above, and you want to make sure that all are invited, all can enjoy it, and all have a good time. Now, this requires some planning.
