The Braille Silver Dollar Is Released

Today, the US Mint released a silver Dollar with readable Braille on it. This is the first coin which contains Braille that people can read with their fingers.

One side of the coins features the portrait of Louis Braille, and the other side shows a child reading a book, with the word "Braille", abbreviated as "brl". While this is not a circulation coin, collectors have access to 400,000 pieces.

This is not the first Braille US coin, in 2003, in the State Quarter series, the Alabama Quarter featured Helen Keller with her name written on the coin with Braille. This script, however, is so tiny that it is not easy to feel with a finger, unlike the newly released silver Dollar.

Some of the income from the sales of the silver Dollar will support the National Federation of the Blind's "Braille Readers are Leaders" campaign. Also, it is a way to create awareness of Braille and literacy for all.
