President Barack Obama Plans To Sign UN Convention
On July 24, President Barack Obama plans to announce signing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. With this, the United States would be number 141 signing the Convention.
Signing the Convention does not only mean a major milestone in accessibility policy. It also has a political message to convey towards the world, the United States is also willing to stand up for human rights. The U.S. has received much criticism over the last several years for not signing the Convention, however, in reality, it is probably the country which already complies with most of it. There is lot's of discussion if many countries who are already current signatories, will be able to deliver what the Convention calls for.
Before his election, President Obama made a commitment to sign the Convention. Maybe it is not a coincidence that his announcement will fall on the 19th birthday of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
