How Can You Promote Accessibility in Your Organization?

Similar to most types of tasks, supporting and implementing accessibility in a company could be done successfully if all the group’s members would carry out their own responsibilities.

In this post, we will take a look at what each member of an organization or company can do to improve the accessibility of information, products, or services.

Human Resources Personnel

If you focus on human resources, one of the first tasks you should do is to create policies related to accessibility. This will provide motivation to the other groups in your company. Make sure the policies are accessible especially for people with disabilities. Doing so will benefit disabled employees when your company hires such individuals.

To help your colleagues to learn more about accessibility, you can organize seminars and workshops centered on this topic.

Finally, you need to initiate the creation of the company's accessibility document. This document details your group’s policies and targeted plans focused on accessibility. Companies based in the U.S. can refer to Section 508 for specific information.

Management personnel

If you are one of the company’s managers, you should see to it that everyone adheres to an accessible form of internal communication. This helps a lot in improving the accessibility of all electronic data in your company. Also, this would benefit everyone in your company, including employees with disabilities.

Engineers and Web/Software Developers

If you work on the company’s website or its web-based applications, you would have the most direct interaction with web accessibility principles and techniques. First, you need to learn the principles of web accessibility. Reading the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 is the best way to start this task. In this regard, our site provides a free WCAG 2.0 tutorial you can use to learn and implement these guidelines.

Once you have studied these guidelines, you can then implement them in your site. This may take a lot of time and effort, but there are numerous online resources to help you in this task. Next, you should perform scheduled maintenance to ensure the site remains accessible, and keep track of visitor's comments related to the accessibility of the site.

Sales and Marketing Personnel

You can promote accessibility by making sure your company provides accessible materials during events such as conferences, shows, or external outreach programs. You also need to see to it that all promotional materials are accessible. These include online ads, printed text, and even video content.

General Staff

This group consists of customer support agents, secretaries, and other equally important staff. If you are in this group, you can do a subtle yet very vital task to promote accessibility. When working on emails, word documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, try to make them as accessible as possible. This contributes a great deal in the accessibility of electronic data, whether or not they are available on your company’s website.

To further help you in this task, Even Grounds offers you its Accessibility Tips and Tricks Newsletter. Here you can read about simple tips to make your electronic information more accessible to people with disabilities.

Conclusion

As stated above, everyone in the company can contribute to accessibility. Some groups can directly help in this endeavor, while others can contribute in more indirect tasks. Nevertheless, these efforts all serve one purpose which is to make information available to as many persons as possible.
